Technology Transformation Doesn’t Fail Because of Technology
What 20+ years of leading transformation has taught me about the human side of change.

1. What We Cannot Buy Is Belief
I’ve spent much of my career around transformation programmes. New platforms. Cloud migrations. Agile ways of working. New operating models. Large teams. Tight deadlines.
And one thing has become increasingly clear to me: the technology is rarely the hardest part.
We can buy the platform. We can build the architecture. We can write the roadmap.
What we cannot buy is belief.
2. Resistance Is Usually Information
People need to understand why something is changing, what it means for them and where they fit in the new world. When that conversation is missing, resistance is often labelled as a “people problem”. I think that is the wrong diagnosis.
Resistance is usually information.
It tells us something hasn't been understood, considered or addressed.
3. Moving Organisations, Not Just Technology
The best transformations I have been part of were not the ones with the most sophisticated technology. They were the ones where people understood the purpose, leaders stayed visible and teams had enough ownership to shape the change.
That has changed how I lead.
I now think about transformation less as implementing technology and more as moving an organisation from one way of working to another.
The technology enables the journey. People determine whether you actually get there.
