The Best Technology Starts With a Problem, Not a Product

What building MySENn has taught me about creating technology that matters.

1. What Problem Are We Actually Trying to Solve?

For years, my job was often to deliver technology that organisations needed.

Building my own product has made me look at technology differently.

When you are building something yourself, there is nowhere to hide behind a roadmap or a requirements document.

You have to start with a simple question: What problem are we actually trying to solve?

2. The Reality Behind MySENn

That question sits at the heart of MySENn.

SEN families don't need another app simply because we can build one. They need something that understands the reality of their lives - the fragmented information, the difficult days, the small changes that are easy to miss and the constant effort of trying to understand what might be behind a child's behaviour.

3. Where Responsible Innovation Begins

That has influenced how I think about product development.

Start with the person. Understand the problem. Then decide whether technology has a meaningful role to play. And sometimes the answer should be no.

I think the technology industry has become very good at asking “What can we build?”

We need to become equally good at asking “Should we build it?” For me, that is where responsible innovation begins.

My Takeaway

What building MySENn has taught me about creating technology that matters.
